Listening

My son and I were out puttering in the Ugly today. Pulling weeds, blowing bubbles, kicking the ball around, nothing serious. Like I said, puttering. Daniel said he was ready to go inside. "Mom, there is a big storm coming, let's go in." I told him to wait, I wanted to take a few pictures, "don't worry." I said. As I snapped a couple shots of some Miner's Lettuce growing next to the fence, and told my son to look at me and smile. He couldn't do it, he kept looking up at the clouds, "Mom, we better go in, a big storm is coming." "Don't worry." I said. I puttered back toward the house, Daniel was already inside. No sooner had I closed the door behind me, when the sky opened up and a down pour of rain started to fall and gusting winds. Sometimes I think adults dismiss children's intuition to quickly. Ok, maybe, I dismiss my children's intuition too quickly. I think I would do better to listen more closely next time.

  1. I happen to be outside with the physical therapist, when it started sprinkling, and I thought I better hobble back in. The minute we did, it let loose!!!

  2. I know! I totally wasn't expecting the fierceness of that little cloud burst. That will teach me.

  4. I could swear that the photos of your garden are actually of my garden! However, since you and Elizabeth seem to be sharing the same little cloud burst, I'm assuming you are in the S.F. area. I have an excuse for an ugly garden. I live in the midwest. I'll be anxious to see how your garden develops with an hour a day and not a huge investment. I'll be rooting (no pun intended) for you!

  5. Dear "Kitchen", Thanks so much for the nice post and welcome! Yes, Elizabeth and I live about 10 minutes from each other, just outside S.F. We met years ago when I taught her youngest daughter music lessons. Is it difficult to garden in the Midwest? I have "America's bread basket" stamped on my brain from elementary school. I guess I just assumed easy growing conditions. Never thought about the cold weather, I guess. Take care.
